Mobile Fare Validators & Token Transit FAQs

Everything you need to know about paying and riding with River Valley Transit’s new fare validators (“Val”).

Getting Started

What are mobile fare validators?

Mobile fare validators (known as “Val”) have been placed on all RVT buses to record mobile fares purchased with the Token Transit app or Smart Card.

How do they work?
  1. Download the Token Transit App and follow the instructions in the “How to Pay and Ride with Token Transit” video.
  2. Link your digital wallet or Visa/credit card to the account.
  3. Purchase your bus pass. Once purchased, the pass is stored in your app until it’s time to use it.
  4. Activate the pass when boarding the bus.
  5. Scan the QR code in the glass light box on the Token Transit validator, located to the right at the front of the bus.
  6. Once the validator flashes green and beeps, your pass has been accepted.

If you do not have a smartphone, you may obtain a Token Transit Smart Card at our Transit Centre on Transit Drive. Your Smart Card is yours to keep — do not discard it, as you can reuse and refill it. Think of it as a digital wallet where bus passes can be stored.

When should I start using the validators?

Wednesday, July 1, 2026.

Do I need to download a new app if I already use Token Transit?

No. Your app will automatically update to generate the QR codes for the validators after July 1.

Will my mobile fare screen look different on my phone?

Yes. Mobile fare screens will now display a QR code to be “read” by the validator.

Using Your Pass

Can I still show my mobile pass to a driver if I don’t want to use the validator?

No. Please begin using the validators on July 1. After a brief grace period, no visual validation of mobile fares will be allowed onboard.

What if my pass isn’t accepted?

A red light will indicate that your pass is not valid.

Can I use a screenshot of the QR code as a pass?

No. The pass is only valid within the app.

Can I send a screenshot of the QR code to another passenger?

No. The QR code automatically updates within the app every ten seconds.

Once activated, how long do I have to use my pass?

Active passes are displayed under “passes in use,” which appears immediately when the Token Transit app is opened. They show a “time left” section with the time remaining until the pass expires. Passes that have not been activated yet are displayed under “stored passes,” and can be stored as long as you like.

Can I pay for more than one pass and pay for those traveling with me?

Yes. You may purchase and store multiple passes. Once purchased, you may activate as many passes at a time as you like. If you are traveling with others and have activated multiple passes on a single phone, simply show the first activated pass to the driver, which will note how many passes are currently active.

What if my battery dies while my pass is active?

You are responsible for keeping your phone charged while using your pass. Refunds will not be issued if your phone’s battery dies while your pass is active.

When do I need an internet connection?

An internet connection is required in order to purchase and activate digital passes on the Token Transit App.

Payment & Smart Cards

Can I still use cash to buy bus passes?

Yes. You may purchase a digital pass with cash, check, or credit card at the Transit Office. Bring your Smart Card and payment and we can sell you passes that will be added to your Smart Card.

You may also use cash when boarding the bus to purchase a 1-Ride fare. Exact fare of $2.00 is required — the driver will not issue change and will not sell any passes.

Can I use the digital validators without the Token Transit app?

Yes. You may use a Smart Card or a valid credit card to Tap to Pay. The Smart Card is the alternative to the app, and you may reload it yourself at Token Transit online or have River Valley Transit help you inside our Transit Centre office on Transit Drive. With a credit card, you may also tap to pay for a 1-Ride pass — each tap is $2.00.

What is a Smart Card?

Think of the Smart Card as a place to store your passes.

How do I get a Smart Card?

If you do not have a smartphone for the Token Transit App, you may get a Smart Card issued to you inside our Transit Centre.

I lost my Smart Card — what do I do?

You may get a replacement card for a fee of $10.00. Please visit our Transit Centre.

Can I buy reduced fare passes on Token Transit?

Yes, reduced fare passes are available for qualified riders. Please contact our RVT office for more information and questions about registering for a reduced fare. Once you have submitted the proper paperwork and meet the criteria, RVT will enable your Token Transit account to allow you to purchase discounted fares on the app or the Smart Card.

Can I buy a pass on the bus?

No passes are sold on the buses. You may use a digital pass stored in your Token Transit App or Smart Card, use your debit or credit card to “Tap to Pay” for a 1-Ride trip, or pay $2.00 exact cash for a 1-Ride trip.

If I buy a 1-Ride trip with cash when boarding, will I get change back?

No. Drivers do not carry cash and no change will be given. You must have exact cash of $2.00.

I don’t have a credit or debit card. Can I pay with cash or check at the Customer Service Center?

Yes. You may visit RVT at the Transit Centre to purchase passes.

Is my credit card information secure?

All personal and credit card information is securely stored using Token Transit’s encrypted, PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) compliant server.

Accounts, Receipts & Gifts

Can I purchase and send passes as gifts?

Yes! You can purchase and send passes to others by visiting tokentransit.com/agency/williamsportpa/send. Once purchased, the pass(es) will be sent to the recipient’s phone via the Token Transit app, and they will receive a text notification that the pass(es) is available.

Is there a record of expired passes?

Yes. You can view a log of your past actions by going to your Account Settings and selecting “History.” A new entry is created every time you use a pass.

Can I have a receipt for my pass purchase?

Yes, but you’ll need to include your email address when you register your account. Receipts will be sent to the email address associated with your account.

What happens to my account if I lose my phone?

Your passes and payment information are linked to the account associated with your phone number — not to your physical phone. Logging in with your phone number on a new device will restore your previous pass and payment information.

Can I request a refund?

Passes are not transferable or replaceable, and all sales are final. However, if you experience technical issues, please contact Token Transit at help@tokentransit.com.

IDs, EZ Fare & Help

Does my Penn College or Lycoming College ID still work as fare?

Yes, nothing has changed. Please show your current, active ID when boarding.

Does my UPMC ID or my Lycoming County ID still work as fare?

Yes, nothing has changed. Please show your current, active ID when boarding.

If I buy EZ Fare Passes before July, will they work after July 1?
